Fabulous opening of the Curaçao Carnival 2003 season

On Saturday evening, January 11, the Curaçao Carnival season started with a colorful cultural happening in the heart of Punda, which is the east side of the historic capital of Curaçao, Willemstad. After a period during which Carnival activities and parades were mostly held on the western side of Willemstad, Otrabanda (meaning the Other Side), the newly installed Task Force made the decision to bring back good old memories of past carnival seasons and reserve some events on the 2003 carnival calendar for Punda. Thousands of people gathered to enjoy the shows and to start getting the feel of their number one cultural manifestation, Carnival.
The new season was welcomed with speeches by the president of the Task Force, Mrs. Corinne Djaoen-Genaro and the lieutenant governor of Curaçao, Mrs. Lisa Richards-Dindial. Tumba Queen, Mrs. Elia Isenia was also present to perform her winning song of the 2002 season. She was backed up by the music orchestra GIO Fuertísimo. There were also presentations of the music orchestra E.R.A., some local dance and carnival groups, and the dance group Pop Corn from Aruba. The ambience was fabulous and indicated that Curaçao can look forward to another memorable carnival season.
